The George Inn, Abbots Leigh – now reopened

Spread the love

Chef owner, Dan Powell at The George Inn, Abbots Leigh is delighted to announce that it is open for business again.

Local boy Dan, of Portishead opened The George with his father David last December. In October, talented chef Dan sadly broke his arm and had to close for a month while it healed.

In the throes of a busy Christmas period, he’s now back fighting fit and to celebrate has launched a fantastic new menu boasting hearty dishes like fillet and faggot of pork, crispy sage, braised peas and leeks with cream or whole partridge with thyme roasted parsnips, potato and bacon ballotine. All menus are based around local seasonal produce, with a great mix of both restaurant and traditional pub dishes available.

Situated on the busy A369, The George is a foodie haven. It would be a lovely end to a brisk winter walk in beautiful Ashton Court or Abbots Pool. Well behaved dogs are welcome in the bar area, and ample parking is available in its own car park.

There is a big log fire by which to enjoy one’s favourite tipple: The George boasts a great range including real ale, cask ciders and fine wines.

Recently, Dan has been working with BBC Radio Bristol’s Martin Evans on a campaign to ‘Banish boring breakfasts’. His smoked salmon omelette sounded so irresistible that one listener travelled straight up from Weston-super-Mare to try it!

Dan has worked in Michelin standard kitchens like Hambledon Hall, Rutland and Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons in Oxford. This is where he says he ‘learnt about discipline, respect for ingredients and not to take short cuts, it is this level care and attention I try to communicate through the entire menu. I am a great believer in not over complicating things and concentrating on the natural flavour of the ingredients’.

Dan has also taught for three years at City of Bristol College, where he himself trained. He will maintain his links to the College in attending a Chefs’ Forum in January. The Chefs’ Forum is a meeting of minds for top local chefs and catering colleges. Dan will mentor and coach promising young chefs through offering work experience and apprenticeships at The George Inn.

Dan would like to invite diners to come and try his new menu and is offering a free three course meal to the party organiser (bookings of ten or more) for the duration of January and February 2012.

There will be some great events taking place at The George throughout 2012 from monthly wine dinners to foraging events and al fresco summer tasting menus in the garden.

Full details will be available on www.thegeorgeinn.uk.com.
