The River Grille at The Bristol Hotel has launched its summer early evening menu. Served between 5:30pm and 6:45pm daily, the menu is perfect for those wishing to eat before they go to the theatre – Singin’ in the Rain at the Bristol Hippodrome, perhaps, or one of the ever-changing events at Colston Hall – and for families who want to take their kids out over the summer holidays, but prefer to eat earlier rather than later. Two courses are priced at £15, while three courses cost £18.50.

The pre-theatre menu is a slimmer version of the restaurant’s full a la carte menu, in that it offers just four starters, four mains and four puddings, and tends towards lighter dishes, to help theatre-goers stay awake! The starters are Spare Rib Terrine (pictured above top); Caesar Salad; Super Food Salad; and Prawn Cocktail (for a supplement of £2.50), with the Super Food Salad being appropriate for both vegetarians and those following a gluten-free diet.

For mains, guests have a choice of Fish & Chips; Chickpea, Rose Harissa & Spinach Baklava (pictured above bottom); Corn Fed Baby Chicken Tikka; and an 8oz Rib Eye Steak (for an additional £8.50). The Baklava is suitable for vegetarians, while the steak is a gluten-free option. A range of sides, from cauliflower cheese to a heritage tomato salad and fries, can be ordered for an extra £2.95 each.

The pudding choices are an Elderflower & Buttermilk Panna Cotta with poached strawberries (pictured above top); a Pecan Pie with malted banana ice-cream (pictured above bottom); and Salted Caramel and Peanut Sundae, brownie & nib biscuits, the latter being particular popular with children! Those looking for a taste of the region will probably want to plump for the West Country Cheese board, served with Bramley apple chutney and oat cakes (a supplement of £3 applies).

All of the dishes bear the innovative touches for which Executive Chef Matt Lord, a finalist in the Best Chef category of the 2014 Bristol Good Food Awards, has become known: bold flavours and creative dishes, cooked with a lightness of touch. The setting, in a lofty, conservatory-style space with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Bristol’s bustling Harbourside, makes The River Grille the perfect spot for a bit of people watching over an early evening dinner.
