It’s always good to see new independent cafes opening up in Bristol, and now Clifton residents and visitors have another to try out. Mockingbird Cafe is situated at 58 Alma Vale Road (the building was formerly a wool shop) and is open from 8am to 5pm, Wednesday to Saturday.

After spending 8 years working in advertising, owner Oliver has changed career paths to focus on the hospitality industry, spending the last year travelling back and forth between the southern US, working in the kitchen at the TownHouse and at Coffee #1 on Gloucester Road. Now he’s opened Mockingbird: a relaxed cafe whose menu and hospitality are inspired by the southern US. With Oliver having worked in the area and his girlfriend a genuine Mississippian, they know what they’re doing!

Mockingbird aims to appeal to local residents and workers, as well as students who are looking for a space to relax and read through/avoid their work.

Coffee and tea are provided by Extract, and are expertly made by Rob, formerly head barista at Boston Tea Party in Clifton Village. The menu includes both more familiar items and those native to the Southern US: think sausage biscuits for breakfast, and grilled pimento cheese sandwiches for lunch. Prices seem to be in line with the rest of the area, and the team are looking to add more options in the coming weeks.
