Since lockdown measures began, food charity FareShare South West has delivered enough food to frontline charities to create 536,113 meals for vulnerable people.
Over the last year, the Bristol-based charity redistributed over 606 tonnes of in-date surplus food from the food industry – enough to create almost 1.5 million meals – to 345 charities, including breakfast clubs, domestic violence refuges, day centres and food banks.
In the eight weeks since lockdown began, demand for FareShare South West services has soared, with the charity distributing over 225 tonnes of food in just nine weeks. As well as fresh food, they are now also providing packets and tins to help create food parcels for those who are self-isolating.
And they couldn’t have done it without a massive amount of help from the community. Ashton Gate FC has donated its grounds to help the charity store up to 150 additional pallets of foo, while Clifton College has made and donated 100 pieces of PPE to protect volunteers both in the warehouse and on the vans. In addition, meat producer Field & Flower has fundraised, donating enough money to FareShare South West to help the charity distribute up to 89,000 meals to vulnerable people.
ALD Automotive has donated £10,000 as well as the use of two vans and employees’ time, allowing the charity to deliver from Ashton Gate to charities across the region – including Devon and Cornwall, an area that they hadn’t served before.
It’s great to see so many local businesses coming together and making a real difference – Bristol’s sense of community spirit is one of the many things I love about this city!
