21 West Café Bistro in Backwell is a finalist in the Micro Employer of the Year awards category in the Bristol and Bath Apprenticeship awards.

The Bistro is reaping the benefits of the apprentice scheme and on-job training for their team. Nailsea teenager Blake Kinnman has just successfully completed a 1-year apprenticeship at the Bistro and will be offered a job commencing in June. Chef apprentice Emma Filer works at the Bistro and also attends City of Bristol College one day a week. Emma worked a shift in the Queens Square tipis at the weekend along side Michelin star chef Josh Eggleton which was a great experience for her.

The Bistro is now well established having been open for two and a half years, with a good reputation for great food and service. This is endorsed by their recent 2014 TripAdvisor certificate of excellence and some fine reviews from local food critics such as Mark Taylor (Bristol Post) and Emily Knight (Bristol Bites).

The Bistro is independently owned and run by a team of local hospitality experts. As well as regular special nights such as Fish Friday and Steak Saturdays, the Bistro also deliver a monthly “themed pop up night”, the next one being a Spanish Night on the 30th of May, with a Spanish menu and entertainment in the form of live Spanish guitar and flamenco dancing.

The Bistro is open for breakfast, morning coffee, lunches and dinner. As well as their regular services they also hold functions such as weddings, celebration parties, christenings and corporate events.

Manager Jayne Grocock said, “We are delighted to be a finalist in the Micro Employer of the Year awards. As a relatively new small business we have strived to have local well-trained staff and the apprentice scheme has certainly enabled us to achieve this. “
