This September, M&S are giving away a free lunch every 12 seconds to lucky shoppers who buy a sandwich from their lunchtime range.
Between September 18th and October 1st, 100,000 sandwich packs will contain special vouchers – with winners able to claim a free main and drink for lunch, worth up to £5.50.
Sadly my sandwich on the first day didn’t include a winning voucher…but it meant I got to enjoy my favourite – a New York Deli Pastrami on soft rye bread, packed with pastrami, Emmental, gherkins, sauerkraut and a mustard dressing.
It’s the biggest food giveaway that M&S have ever done! They first started selling sandwiches back in 1981 when a store manager decided to wrap up some café sandwiches and offer them for sale in the food hall…and since then, their sandwich range has grown to include gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options, as well as a load of meaty and fishy fillings.
They sell 7 sandwiches every single second – 100 million each year – which means that they use 300 tonnes of butter (the weight of 4 Boeing 737s), 1000 tonnes of prawns (the weight of 8.5 blue whales), and 700 tonnes of mayo (the weight of Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer Statue). Some serious food stats!
