Bristol’s independent brewery, Moor Beer, has made another donation to fund cancer research thanks to its PMA brew.

Sales of PMA have enabled Moor Beer to provide an additional £3,219 to the Bristol University Cancer Research Fund.

PMA was brewed in collaboration with Hardcore Hits Cancer (HCXHC), the charitable organisation that supports those affected by the disease. Since PMA’s 2016 launch, it has raised £7,000.

The money has been raised through selling the beer via national and international distributors, as well as locally through the brewery, working with brewing friends Lost and Grounded, and at an event at The Tobacco Factory.

Moor Beer describe PMA as “a highly-drinkable 5.3% pale ale with oats and an intense hoppy flavour”. It’s available in cans, as well as on draught, all of which are naturally conditioned with live yeast, unfined and vegan-friendly.

Justin Hawke, Moor Beer’s owner and head brewer, who was named the prestigious British Guild of Beer Writers’ ‘Brewer of the Year’ 2017, said: “PMA is very popular, which is great as it means money is raised for such a great cause. It truly is a beer that fights cancer.

“A chance meeting with the HCXHC team led to the brewing of PMA, with a recipe that I’d wanted to use for a long time.

“Most people will know someone who’s been affected by cancer. We think it’s important to maintain a Positive Mental Attitude as well as raise awareness and fund donations. What better way to do it than with a fantastic, flavoursome beer?”

This donation from Moor Beer is the second to the Bristol University Cancer Research Fund, with further donations planned for the end of every year. Professor Stefan Roberts, Professor of Cancer Biology, said: “The University Cancer Research Fund expresses its gratitude to Moor Beer for their event that raised £3,219 for cancer research. The University of Bristol Cancer Research Fund exists to support innovative ‘proof of principle’ projects at the University. Thanks to the donation from Moor Beer, talented researchers will receive the funding needed to test new and exciting ideas. Without such funding, many very promising projects would never get off the ground.”

“Over time the University Cancer Research Fund has supported research into some of the most commonly-occurring cancers, including lung cancer, bowel cancer, prostate cancer and childhood leukaemia. The research supported has ranged from the development of new diagnostic tests and drug treatments, to epidemiological research into what predisposes some people to cancer.”

“It is great that people can support cancer research through something as simple as enjoying a fantastic beer. We are grateful to Moor Beer for raising awareness of the challenge to find cures for cancer and for supporting innovative projects at the University.”

PMA is available from the usual Moor Beer distributors, at its Bristol Tap Room, at the newly-opened Moor Vaults Tap Room in London’s Bermondsey, or from the online shop.
