Exciting news for Clifton’s Papadeli, who have taken home another award to add to their collection this March!

On Monday, March 9th, the Guild of Fine Food crowned the UK’s best independent retailers in the Shop of the Year 2020 finale. These awards are designed to recognise and promote excellence in independent retail, with trophies presented in six different categories at the awards ceremony at the Fodder Farm Shop and Café in Harrogate.

Judging for the awards comprised two rounds – an announced visit from one of their expert judges, plus a mystery shop organised by customer experience specialists, Insight6. And it’s great that Bristol’s yet again made its mark on the UK’s foodie map, with Papadeli on Clifton’s Alma Road taking home the award for the Delicatessen & Grocer category.

Feedback from the judging confirms that the Papadeli team and offering charmed the judges with its “general ambience” and range of homemade cakes. Judging was based not only on the overall shopping experience, but also financial performance, staff training opportunities and environmental initiatives in place.

The panel of judges included Edward Berry of The Flying Fork; Stuart Gates, former managing director at Fortnum & Mason and senior buyer at Harrods; award-winning retailer Tracey Colley and food writer, Patrick McGuigan. Between them, they rated, scored and provided feedback on every aspect of the shops before agreeing on an overall category winner.
