Migrateful online cookery classes

Bristol and London-based refugee charity, Migrateful, has moved to online cookery classes in a bid to keep the charity alive and continue supporting their chefs.

Migrateful runs cookery classes led by migrant chefs who are struggling to integrate and access employment in the UK as a result of legal and linguistic barriers. These cookery classes provide the chefs not only with a great environment to learn English and build confidence, but also the chance to promote contact and cultural exchange with the wider community.

As a result of the coronavirus outbreak, and to comply with government guidelines, Migrateful has had to cancel all of its cookery classes for the foreseeable future. As a small social enterprise that relies almost exclusively on ticket sales to fund what they do, it’s proved to be a hard blow to the organisation. In an effort to keep the charity alive, to continue to empower vulnerable migrants and to foster a sense of community during these tricky times, Migrateful has launched a series of virtual cookery classes.

With a cohort of 32 chefs from across the globe, participants can expect to learn to make dishes from cuisines as diverse as Pakistani, Albanian, Syrian, Lebanese and more. The charity describes the classes as “a way to build cooking skills and discover a new culinary tradition from the comfort of one’s home, all whilst helping a great cause”.

Cookery class participants will be sent a list of the ingredients they need for the recipe plus a Zoom meeting link ahead of time. The interactive cookery session will see the chef leading the group through the recipe, stopping regularly to answer questions, share anecdotes and give feedback on the dishes.

You’ll find all of Migrateful’s online cookery classes listed on their website here. Pricing is based on a pay-what-you-can donation system, and there are also gift vouchers available to purchase.
