Fish and Chips

It’s all going to be about the staycation this year and here at Bristol Bites we’re already thinking about the great places we can spend eating not only in Bristol and Gloucestershire, but the rest of the country too.

When it comes to the summertime, nothing beats a tray of fish and chips, some nice weather, and an ice cream or two. Like any good trip, food should play a vital part, so if you’re fancying a UK trip to the seaside, think with your stomach and head to one of these great spots where you’ll find some of the very best fish and chips in the country…

Blackpool

Blackpool is the home of a lot of things in the UK from cabaret to the penny slots, and of course bingo. Oh, and its fish and chips aren’t bad either.

Bingo has become hugely popular in the last few years, with many UK bingo sites being awash with players testing their skills. And what better way than to spend an afternoon in one of Blackpool’s many bingo halls followed by a portion of fish and chips.

Yorkshire Fisheries is up there with the very best on the Lancashire coast, offering some stunning fish and chips. They’ve had many celebrity guests visit to sample the fish, with several pictures lining the walls from Strictly stars to Britain’s best loved entertainers.

Alnwick

It’s a fair trip from Bristol, but Alnwick is slightly inland and around a 10-minute drive to Alnmouth, the closest beach and seaside town. Famed for its castle, which has appeared in a number of Harry Potter films, as well as a series of others, the town’s Carlo’s fish and chip shop was recently voted as one of the best in the country, and it offers the ideal afternoon enjoying some Carlo’s either in the Alnwick Garden or beside the castle in the sunshine.

Anglesey

Anglesey in North Wales is a popular hotspot for visitors, with the likes of Colwyn Bay, Caernarfon and Conwy all relatively close by. It’s at Holyhead on Anglesey that provides the best fish and chips in the area though, and ideal if you’re staying nearby or just about to jump on the ferry to Ireland.

There’s plenty to do in the area from mountain zoos, to castles, to marvellous walks in the countryside and neighbouring Snowdonia. However, it’s Chippy Chippy which has caught our attention. Interestingly, not only is the food great it also caught the attention of Radio 1 and Greg James a few years ago when the ‘C’ fell off the chip shop’s sign, becoming known as the Hippy Chippy.

Brixham

Brixham is located on the south side of Torbay in Devon and is a stunning little fishing town that has tons of festivals going on throughout the year as well as a long history with warships right from Viking times through to the D-Day fleet which sailed from the town. This offers up plenty of interesting places to visit and learn about the town, and all can be rounded off with some grub from David’s Fish and Chips. Located just a short walk from the harbour, it’s another which has received multiple awards as well as being named as one of the best in the UK for 2021.
